When Olaudah Equiano was eleven years old he and his sister were kidnapped and later separated and sold to striver traders in the West Indies. He spent a small get along of time in Virginia and the remaining time on British Trade Vessels and slave transmits serving as a slave to the captains. While on a British Vessel, Captain hydrogen Pascal gave Olaudah the name Gustavas Vassas, which he used throughout his invigoration (Equiano, p 26). While serving Captain Pascal, Olaudah traveled round the world visiting England, Holland, Scotland, Nova Scotia and many other places within the US (Equiano, p. 7-10).
Equiano states that his capture was the typical of how the slave trade worked (Equiano, p.8). This was nothing unsanded to him, his father owned slaves himself in the Igbo Nation. Many of these slaves were either slaves of war or had been convicted of crimes such as, adultery or kidnapping. Being an able co-captain of the ship, Equiano come with Pascal when he was called back into the Royal Navy. By the give notice of the war Equiano was literate and an able seaman (Equiano, p.10). Expecting to be posture free after serving, Equiano was forced on to a ship that was going the West Indies.
