Through the early 1900s Mexican-Americans mainly lived in the rural areas, but today ninety percent of the populations is estimated to live in metropolitan areas. Seventy-three percent of Mexican-Americans lived in California and Texas and are the least well-educated group among both major Hispanic groups and among the total U.S population.
The dropout rate among Mexican-American students is estimated at forty percent or more. (Davis, 1988) Due to larger persona of school dropout rate, Mexican-Americans as a group are dominant allele in farm work and service occupations than does the U.S populations as a whole. These lower status jobs translate into lower income and higher impoverishment rates. The median family income of Mexican-Americans for 2010 was $40,165 in comparison to $54,168 for non-Hispanic White families. (U.S. Bureau of the Cencus, 2010)
