Posturing is another nonverbal signal. We see quite a deal of posturing in the film from the macho poses and postures of gangsters and the brothers when they become angry to the effeminate and swishing posturing of Smecker who is a flamboyant homosexual. We also see nonverbal communication between Smecker and one of the men, HoJo, that he sleeps with. At one establish we see that HoJo tries to close the distance between he and Smecker, another nonverbal signal. At this point Smecker becomes offended, showing that personal space and distance can undermine the boundaries of interpersonal communication. Smecker asks HoJo what he is act to do by this gesture and HoJo replies, "I just cute to cuddle," to which Smecker replies, "Cuddle? What a fag" (Duffy, 1999). Smecker has already slapped HoJo for this nonverbal communication that he finds offensive. This shows that while nonverbal communication can arrest intimacy in interpersonal communication it can also distance the communicators from intimacy.
