Chapter One: The novel begins with a personal note by the narrator, mountain pass Carraway. He relates that he has a tendency to check all judgments against people and that he has been conditioned to be hold toward those who havent had his advantages. Carraway came from a prominent family from the Midwest, graduate from Yale and fought in the Great War. afterwards the war and a head of restlessness, he decided to go East to learn the cohere business.
