Zero or Hero
In both Beowulf and Grendel, the topic of endurance is touched upon. While courage is exemplified in its physiological radiation pattern in Beowulf, Grendel focuses on the inner meaning of heroism. In otherwise words, it is not the result of the act of heroism that makes a trustworthy hero, but the intention of heroism in the first place.
In Anglo-Saxon times, it was common for people to boast about their accomplishments. In Beowulf, Unferth is given the epithet of Unferth the Boaster. Unferth is portrayed as a pontifical talking thane who believes he is stronger and a better fighter than he really is. In addition to his epithet and tall talk, Unferth is shown giving Beowulf his sword Hrunting to use against Grendel. This act of heroism lies above the surface, as Unferths intentions seem only to revel those who are watching him.
Grendel takes a different mount in portraying Unferths heroism. When Grendel attacks the mead hall, Unferth attempts to fight valiantly against Grendel. When this fails, he follows Grendel pricker to his cave, claiming no man will ever know if he died there or fled to the hills like a coward. and so that is rightful(a) heroism. In addition to this, Unferth is the only thane who is not inebriated during the apple fight.
Though this fact seems insignificant, it must be interpreted into consideration that unlike the other thanes, Unferth is steadfast in his actions. He is also the first and only one to realize that Grendel is oftentimes more than a primitive wolf, and that he is able to converse English. Unferths realization that Grendel is more than a brainless creature serves as a foil to all the other humans, who never take into consideration that Grendel can be intelligent.
The different approach taken to portray heroism in both novels are a reflection of the authors viewpoint. Beowulf, which emphasizes Anglo -Saxon ways, focuses on the physical aspects of heroism, while Grendel focuses on the inner meaning.
