It is said that rodeo was born in the proterozoic 1800s when two rivaling cowboys challenged each other to see who was better at scatter work in 1846. They gathered at deer trail Colorado with a crowd to watch. The challenges that they preformed were basically ranch work. This gathering sparked interest in others, and the number of challengers began to grow.

Mexicans have been in America since the 1500s and were part of the early, informal rodeo challenges. This is because many ranch hand were Mexicans; they could ride well and compete well in these challenges. Mexicans brought fudge riding to these challenges. Bull riding came from Bull wrestling which originated from Spain. This was the graduation exercise sport, in these challenges that was not related to ranch work at all.

As the years went on the rodeo became much and to a greater extent organized. It is said that Alpine, Texas, claims to have had the graduation spectator rodeo in 1882. Pecos, Texas, claims to have held the first rodeo that had prize money, it occurred on July 4th 1883, and was said to be the longest running rodeo in existence.
The other town that claimed it had the first rodeo is Prescott, it held the first organized rodeo, that included a prized purse, organizing committee, and gate admission.
